Englisch-Sprachenwettbewerb

Großer Erfolg für das GYS!

On Monday 10th March SPEAK held its annual English language competition (Sprachenwettbewerb) in the Pädagogische Hochschule (FK). BORG (FK) had two competitors, Samuel Mann (8M) and Felicitas Schefknecht (6E) competing against the 14 others. The two students were highly motivated in the preparation period and seemed very relaxed yet extremely focused on the task ahead. Both students put in the required preparation lessons and managed very well with the few students involved. As the day approached, they focused more on the way in which to present themselves and their opinion, along with trying to make “enjoyment” a crucial factor.

The day seemed to approach very quickly and Felicitas, in particular, seemed extremely nervous. The first hurdle was a group discussion which lasted a total of 20 minutes, which involved 4 competitors plus a British moderator. Felicitas was the first to take the stage and represent the school. She faced a difficult group, with a feisty boy from Bludenz. She showed a lot of initiative and character during this round, which certainly seemed to please the jury. Sam was in the final group and once again showed impressive skills in speaking and in his ability to focus on the task.

The second round was an individual presentation which both the BORG competitors stood out with ease. Neither had their favourite topics (Sams being Politics and Felicitas, Abortion Rights) but “knocked the socks off” the jury nevertheless.

The final round saw 4 students in a role-play scenario with a native speaker. Each competitor showed great ability in their speaking abilities, especially Sam with his graceful British accent. Both Felicitas and Sam seemed to thoroughly enjoy the stage and took control of their required character.

The final rankings were:

1. Andres MENDOZA, BG Feldkirch
2. Samuel MANN,  Gymnasium Schillerstraße
3. Felicitas SCHEFKNECHT,  Gymnasium Schillerstraße

I would like to say that as their language trainer for this competition, I am very proud of the both of them for achieving such high outcomes. I remember asking them in the first preparation lesson “What do you both want out of this?” Their answers where pretty similar, that they both wanted to put their language skills to the test and see how they compare with others in a competitive environment. We can safely say that you are both an asset to this school and have done everyone, within reach, proud.
I thank you for making my first experience one to remember and be proud of.
